One man suffered minor injuries, including lacerations, Monday when his big rig flipped over onto its side at Interstate 5 and Lake Hughes Road in Castaic, spilling about 25 gallons of hydraulic fluid and blocking freeway access ramps.

Shortly after noon, a big rig southbound on the freeway turned onto the off-ramp at Lake Hughes Road when it failed to make the freeway curve, a CHP spokeswoman said. The truck flipped on the off-ramp.

CHP officers reported the big rig burned its brakes.

Los Angeles County firefighters were dispatched to the scene, along with a hazardous materials truck and other Fire Department vehicles on a report of a “potential chemical component” to the incident.

“We had an overturned truck leaking unknown fluid,” fire Inspector Tony Imbrenda said initially.

Firefighters were able to determine that the leaking liquid was hydraulic fluid, he said.

“We transported one patient to a local hospital,” Imbrenda said.

That patient, later identified by a CHP officer as the truck driver, suffered lacerations and other minor injuries in the crash.

CHP officers stopped traffic on both the on-ramp and off-ramp of the freeway. While freeway lanes were open both directions, the ramps at Lake Hughes Road were expected to be closed for more than seven hours, reopening about 8 p.m.
