‘Romance at the Rancho’
Bring your special someone to Rancho Camulos Museum National Historic Landmark to experience “Romance at the Rancho.”  Docent-led tours will focus on the love stories of couples associated with Camulos. Bring a picnic and blanket and enjoy the beautiful romantic setting. A special treat will also be provided. The suggested donation is $14 per couple. Call 805-521-1501 to make a reservation. Sweetheart Gala
The annual Sweetheart Gala hosted by SCV Women and Men of Honor to benefit Cardiac Care Services at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital will be held at 6 p.m. today at the Hyatt Regency Valencia. Mardi Gras Dinner Dance
Saint Kateri Catholic Church is sponsoring its “Mardi Gras Dinner Dance” 6 p.m. today at the Odyssey Restaurant in Granada Hills. Event to feature live and silent auctions as well as a raffle in which the prize is a free week long trip to Cabo San Lucas. Info: 661-296-7547.

On this date in the SCV: In 2001, U.S. Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon introduced President George W. Bush’s tax plan to Remo Inc., the nationally renowned drum making company. The plan included a 10-year, $1.6 trillion tax cut plan.

Today’s Highlight in History: On Feb. 9, 1943, the World War II battle of Guadalcanal in the southwest Pacific ended with an Allied victory over Japanese forces.

Ten years ago: President George W. Bush told congressional Republicans at a policy conference in West Virginia that Iraq had fooled the world for more than a decade about its banned weapons and the United Nations was now facing “a moment of truth” in disarming Saddam Hussein. The U.S. Navy ended its last bombing exercises on Puerto Rico’s Vieques Island. The West beat the East 155-145 in the first double overtime game in NBA All-Star history.

Five years ago: Democrat Barack Obama swept the Louisiana primary and caucuses in Nebraska and Washington state; Republican Mike Huckabee outpolled John McCain in the Kansas caucuses and Louisiana primary, while McCain won the Washington caucuses. A suicide bomber blasted a political gathering in northwestern Pakistan, killing at least 27 people. Space shuttle Atlantis, carrying a European-built science lab, docked with the international space station.

One year ago: President Barack Obama freed 10 states from some of the toughest requirements of the No Child Left Behind education law. The Pentagon formally opened thousands of jobs to women in units that were closer to the front lines than ever before. Former skiing champion Jill Kinmont Boothe, who became a painter and a teacher after she was paralyzed during a race and was the subject of a book and two Hollywood films, died in Carson City, Nev., at age 75.
