The Castaic Education Foundation turned fun into funds at its annual Sweethearts for Education Wine-Tasting Fundraiser Thursday night at Salt Creek Grille in Valencia.

Diane Fiero, the foundation’s co-chair, said the annual event is the foundation’s primary fundraiser and typically attracts a crowd of 80 to 100 people and raises between $3,000 and $5,000.

That money is then poured back into schools in the Castaic Union School District in the form of grants to pay for classroom materials and activities, Fiero said.

As for why the foundation chose an adult activity like wine-tasting to benefit students, Fiero said the foundation wanted to put on a relaxing, elegant event.

“Let’s be frank: Most of the people who give money to support education are adults,” Fiero said. “So we wanted to put on an event that would be fun for adults.”
