Valencia High senior safety and four-year varsity starter Tedric Thompson decided not to go to the school where his brother and friend play.

Thompson, a hard-hitting safety, accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Colorado on Monday night and made it official by signing a letter of intent Tuesday.

Wednesday was National Signing Day, which marks the first day high school seniors and junior college transfers can sign national letters of intent to four-year colleges in football, field hockey, soccer, track and field, cross country and men’s water polo.

The All-Santa Clarita Valley and All-Foothill League first-teamer chose Colorado after also considering the University of Minnesota and Fresno State.

Thompson took an official visit to Minnesota, where his brother Cedric Thompson and friend and former Valencia High defensive back Brock Vereen currently play.

“Colorado will be getting an outstanding athlete that is capable of great things in the future,” said Valencia head coach Larry Muir. “Very physical safety that can come downhill and tackle well. At the same time, he is athletic enough to stay with Pac-12 wide receivers.”

Schools across the Santa Clarita Valley marked the day with National Signing Day ceremonies.

Also, three College of the Canyons football players signed with four-year schools on Wednesday — cornerback Sam Lee will transfer to Brigham Young University, offensive lineman Lloyd Tunstill signed with Texas Christian University and defensive end and Hart High graduate Justyn Eddins will play at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

A trio of COC players previously signed letters of intent.

Linebacker Jake Woolley signed with Portland State, defensive back Jesse Simpson is going to Wyoming and safety Eric Finney will play for University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.

Late last month, two other Santa Clarita Valley football players committed to Big Ten Conference schools and made those commitments official on Wednesday.

Golden Valley senior Leon Jacobs will be going to Wisconsin and Canyon High wide receiver Drew Wolitarsky is going to Minnesota.
