Today in history

Today is Thursday, Feb. 7, the 38th day of 2013. There are 327 days left in the year..

On this date in the SCV: On this day in 2000, 8-year-old Dillon Paigen assisted in helping emergency vehicles rescue a man suffering from the flu when Paigen found the man lying on the floor with his eyes half closed. Paigen was at the Twin Palms restaurant in Valencia with his parents, who were unaware of what had happened until after the fact.

Today’s Highlight in History: On Feb. 7, 1943, during World War II, the government abruptly announced that rationing of shoes made with leather would go into effect in two days, limiting consumers to buying three pairs per person per year. (Rationing was lifted in October 1945.)

Ten years ago: The government raised its terror threat level from yellow to “high risk” orange, warning of a growing possibility that al-Qaida would launch an attack against the United States to coincide with Muslim holy days. President George W. Bush courted the leaders of France and China in an uphill struggle to win U.N. backing for war with Iraq. Unidentified attackers bombed the exclusive El Nogal social club in Bogota, Colombia, killing 36 people and injuring 160 others.

Five years ago: John McCain effectively sealed the Republican presidential nomination as chief rival Mitt Romney suspended his campaign. After two months of delay, shuttle Atlantis blasted into orbit with Europe’s gift to the international space station, a $2 billion science lab named Columbus.

One year ago: In a setback for Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum swept GOP caucuses in Minnesota and Colorado and a non-binding primary in Missouri.
