In a multi-agency take-down Wednesday, deputies stopped a family convoy of three vehicles traveling through Castaic and arrested two suspected car thieves at gunpoint, a local sheriff’s deputy said.

A 19-year-old Modesto man and his 15-year-old female passenger were in a stolen white Ford Mustang when they were arrested and charged with car theft, said Deputy Josh Dubin of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

A second man identified as the 19-year-old’s brother, who was driving one of the other cars, was arrested on a driver’s license offense.

The Mustang was one of three vehicles traveling together when all three — including a gray Dodge Charger and a white pickup truck — were stopped at gunpoint by local deputies, the Sheriff’s Department Park’s Bureau and California Highway Patrol officers.

No shots were fired and no one was hurt, Dubin said.

Shortly after 12:30 p.m., a “proactive deputy” on patrol spotted the Mustang and noticed it was reported stolen from Modesto, Dubin said in a written statement released shortly after the arrest,

“The deputy noticed the stolen vehicle, a white Ford Mustang, appeared to be traveling with two other vehicles that were also registered out of the Modesto area,” he said.

“Due to the fact the three vehicles appeared to all be traveling together and could pose significant risk to deputies and the public, the deputy requested assistance and conducted a pre-stop coordination.”

Other deputies, including those assigned to the county’s Parks Bureau, along with CHP officers, responded to assist in the traffic stops carried out on all three vehicles, he said.

There was no police chase, Dubin said.

“All three of them yielded without incident,” he said.

The take-down happened on the lot of the Mobil gas station on The Old Road near Lake Hughes Road.
Gas station worker Kasey Collins said he saw the whole thing go down.

Deputies with their guns drawn stopped all three vehicles near the fuel pumps and ordered all the occupants to get out, he said.

“Two officers held their rifles out and they were shouting instructions,” Collins said.

“I was a little concerned at first because there were so many guns drawn. You see the squad cars, with about 15 converging within what seemed like a minute,” he added.

“They got pretty loud. They were shouting over and over at them, and it seemed like there was no movement for ... a couple of minutes,” he said.

No customers were at the pumps when the incident happened, Collins said.

Charged with vehicle theft are Angelino John, 19, and a 15-year-old girl identified as the passenger.

Also charged was the driver of the second car, identified as John’s brother, Vinny Diaz, 21, of Modesto. He was arrested for driving on a suspended license.

Both vehicles were towed and stored pending further investigation.

The third vehicle and its occupants, who were related to the occupants of the other vehicles, were released at the scene without charges, Dubin said.

The investigation was ongoing.
