Prior to the start of the 2012-13 season, Valencia Vikings girls soccer head coach Sean O’Connell took his team into the school’s gymnasium and told them to look up at the championship banners.

That day, he recalls telling them, “This is the place you can come back and see what you accomplished. For all of eternity, you can come back here. Picture that championship banner.”

That banner became a reality on Tuesday, when Valencia defeated the Hart Indians 3-1 at Hart High School to secure its first outright Foothill League title since 2001.

“We had a lot more on the line and really wanted it,” said four-year varsity player Lindsay Bos. “We knew what was at stake.

Bailey Reid put the Vikings (14-1-5 overall, 7-0-2 Foothill League) on the board first, scoring in the 16th minute off a cross from Eryn Spencer.

Unlike in the first meeting between the two teams, a 1-1 draw on Jan. 18, Valencia was able to add a little insurance.

Midway through the second half, Spencer sent another cross into the box that was chipped up by Samantha Simon and headed perfectly into the back of the net by senior Taylor Venegas.

“It was very big (to get that goal),” Venegas said. “Nobody wants a tie when you outplay them the whole game. But we came back and made a statement.”

Simon put the Vikings on the board again minutes later, before Hart (11-7-7, 4-3-2) scored its lone goal of the game on a penalty kick by Sophie Cortes with two minutes remaining after a hand ball was called in the box.

“This is where we’ve been at after we lost the (first) Valencia game,” said Hart head coach Justin Lundin. “The intensity level turned in the wrong direction.”

Hart will look to turn things around in its regular season finale Tuesday at Canyon.

Valencia looks to add to its league title with an undefeated league season, which it could close out with a win or draw against West Ranch at home on Thursday.
