A reckless and speeding driver who reportedly switched lanes and ran red lights in Newhall this morning has eluded local sheriff’s deputies, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies are looking for the driver of a gold-colored minivan last seen on Newhall Avenue near Sierra Highway, said Lt. Mark Hershey.

Shortly after 10:50 a.m., motorists contacted deputies to report a driver spotted swerving on Railroad Avenue and traveling south toward Sierrra Highway, he said.

At least one caller reported he saw the motorist run a red light in Newhall.

“They didn’t find him,” Hershey said, adding the elusive driver may be intoxicated.

Deputies received no reports of injury in connection with the calls received about the reckless driver.

“And, we don’t know if he got on the freeway or not,” Hershey said, referring to Highway 14.

The driver was passing motorists so fast they couldn’t get a license plate, Hershey said. “He was probably drunk and people were calling in about it.

“He got past Newhall and we couldn’t keep up with him,” Hershey said.

California Highway Patrol officers were aware of the situation, he said.
