A 25-year-old Bakersfield man has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol in the crash that claimed the life of a Las Vegas woman early Sunday morning, court documents show.

James Samuel Buterbaugh was charged within two hours of the crash on Interstate 5 near Templin Highway that killed 24-year-old Meagan Carrier of Las Vegas.

Carrier, a passenger in the SUV driven by Buterbaugh, died at the scene as a result of the collision, according to a report prepared by the CHP officer investigating the crash.

Shortly after 4 a.m., a 2007 Honda Pilot traveling north on the interstate slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer stopped on the right shoulder just south of Templin Highway, said CHP Officer Michael Gubelli.

The driver of the Pilot was later identified as Buterbaugh.

Buterbaugh, who was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital on Sunday, is now in custody in Los Angeles with bail set at $100,000.

He is scheduled to appear in San Fernando Superior Court this morning.

The driver of the big rig, identified only as a 54-year-old man from Carson City, Nevada, was asleep in his rig when the SUV slammed into the back of his truck, he said.

He suffered no significant injury, according to the CHP.
