Dumbing down of America example

I wasn’t going to respond to Nancy Neal’s letter. However, I will because it is an excellent example of the dumbing of America.

Does anyone still doubt the Bush administration deliberately misled the nation into invading Iraq? That they made up the intelligence about WMDs and yellow cake? And a connection of Iraq and 9/11?

That the “war” is illegal?

Does anybody really not understand what we’re talking about here?

It’s not just war we are talking about; let’s discuss torture and the creation of offshore prisons operating outside of our borders and Constitution.

Let’s talk about illegal wiretapping of American citizens, about environmental policy and voting rights, and many of the abuses involved using the power of government to reward political friends and punish political enemies.

At the Justice Department, for example, political appointees illegally reserved nonpolitical positions for “right-thinking Americans,” and there’s strong evidence that officials used their positions both to undermine the protection of minority voting rights and to persecute Democratic politicians.

Let’s also not forget Iraq’s failed reconstruction: The Bush administration handed billions of dollars in no-bid contracts to politically connected companies, companies that then failed to deliver.

The above and much more are not made up or debatable. In the months to come we will see so much more come to light.

The question is whether Obama will prosecute Bush-Cheney-Rumsfield like they should be. War crimes were committed and admitted to on television.

For America to again be a beacon of light, freedom and democracy to the world, we need to show that no one is above the law.

So when I read letters like the one to which I am responding, it is less with laughter that I respond — it is with consternation for the intellectual foundation of our country and the knowledge of the people who vote and opine in public forums such as this.
