A woman is dead following a traffic collision on Interstate 5 near Templin Highway early Sunday morning, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

Shortly after 4 a.m., a Honda Pilot travelling northbound on the interstate slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer stopped on the right shoulder, just south of Templin Highway, said CHP Officer Michael Gubelli.

“The passenger in the Honda was the fatality,” he said. “The passenger was a female.

“A tractor trailer had broken down and was on the right shoulder, off the roadway,” he said.

The driver, according to CHP officers who arrived at the scene, was asleep in his rig when the SUV slammed into the back of his truck.

“The Honda Pilot veered over to the right and struck the tractor-trailer,” Gubelli said.

There is no word yet on the condition of the two drivers, he said.

Within 20 minutes of the collision, traffic was stopped in all four lanes of the interstate, with vehicles passeding the crash on the left shoulder, according to the CHP.

All lanes were re-opened at 9:45 a.m.

CHP Officers are investigating the crash.
