The SCV family mourns its losses

It’s been a difficult week in the Santa Clarita Valley. Among our losses:

Heather Warrick: I’ve met Heather and her mother, Nancy Coulter on many occasions. They were two of the more positive, inspirational people I’ve ever met.

Heather courageously, and publicly, fought her battle against cancer for nearly two decades.

Whenever I would feel sorry for myself, or bemoan some small ache or pain I would think of Heather and everything she endured for so long.

A celebration of Heather’s life will be held 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10 at the Hyatt Regency Valencia.

Mindy Cornell Reed: Mindy was a young mother and wife and a successful SCV businesswoman who owned Chara Girl Boutique, 28200 Bouquet Canyon Road, Suite B, Saugus. I was shocked to hear of her death. I only met her a few times, but she was one of the SCV’s brightest lights.

Norm Harris: One of the legion of SCV volunteers who has given so much blood, sweat and even tears to the SCV. Harris was a huge supporter of the SCV Historical Society and worked for years tirelessly to help restore the station’s steam train, in addition to his other passions.

Have a Hart

McKenna Gibson, age 9, has witnessed the families of her teammates struggle with cancer, including several children who have lost their parents to the disease. She wanted to find a way to help. McKenna started the Have A Hart Foundation to raise money for registration fees to those affected by cancer. Also she will be collecting new and gently used equipment to help them out. To contact McKenna email: crystalgibson2@yahoo.com. Dreaming is believing according McKenna, a player in the Hart Baseball/Softball League. We need more McKennas in our world!

Mardi Gras at the Odyssey Restaurant in Granada Hills is sponsored by the Saint Kateri Church Finance Council and the Women’s Guild with proceeds from the event to benefit the Church Building Fund. Head over 6 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, Feb. 9 for dinner, music and dancing. Tickets are $55 each. For reservation contact: Ana Butler 661-551-2999; Hazel Canevari, 661-255-2339. Full Throttle on the way

Is it too early to get excited about the latest Six Flags Magic Mountain attraction heading our way? I understand that construction is well underway for Full Throttle, touted as the world’s tallest and fastest looping coaster. Magic Mountain will break another world record. With this addition, Six Flags Magic Mountain, firmly holds the coveted “Coaster Capital of the World” crown — with a total of 18 roller coasters — more than any other theme park on the planet. Based on guest feedback, the Valencia theme park has introduced an exclusive opportunity for season pass holders to pay once and eat all year for free with the new 2013 season dining pass. Season pass holders who purchase the Season Dining Pass will receive one lunch and dinner every time they visit the park in 2013. The price for the Magic Mountain Season Dining Pass is $99.99 and can be purchased online or at the park. For an additional $25, season pass holders can add Hurricane Harbor. My favorite food at the park will always be the funnel cakes. In fact, I think I have a funnel cake craving right now!
