Santa Clarita city officials will hold a study session Tuesday to discuss both the outlook of the city’s budget for the 2013-2014 fiscal year and a potential split of Los Angeles County.

The process for setting the city’s budget typically takes around six months, beginning in January and wrapping up in June. The 2013-2014 fiscal year begins July 1.

The county-split matter is being examined at the request of Carl Boyer, a former Santa Clarita mayor. Boyer has repeatedly said Los Angeles County is too big to be well managed and should be split into several smaller counties.

His most recent bid to divide the county calls for cities to make the request.

Los Angeles County is far and away the most populous county in the United States and has almost 10 million residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
