Due to the quick thinking and heightened awareness of a local eighth-grade girl, a more serious crime was likely averted, sheriff's officials said today.

The girl, a student at Sierra Vista Junior High, was walking home from school Friday when she noticed a man standing across the street staring at her. She felt uncomfortable and when the man began walking across the street toward her, she started running.

She noticed that he began running behind her. She was able to outrun him and immediately told her family when she got home.

Deputies responded to the area and found a man meeting the description walking in the area. Deputies detained the man, pending investigation.

Abran Casarez, a 35-year-old male from Canyon Country, was ultimately arrested and booked at Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station for child annoyance. He will be held on an unrelated probation hold.

This incident occurred at Stillmore Street and Camp Plenty Road in Canyon Country at approximately 3:20 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013.

If you have any information related to this crime, please call Santa Clarita Valley Station at 661-255-1121. Reference #: 13-01536-06
