Valencia Vikings girls basketball did what it had to do Tuesday night.

Now it has set itself up to battle for its first Foothill League title since 2005.

The Vikings (18-6 overall, 7-0 Foothill League) beat the Golden Valley Grizzlies 68-39 on Tuesday at Golden Valley and now faces second-place Canyon on Friday.

If the Vikings win that game, they earn at least a share of the Foothill League title.

Valencia head coach Jerry Mike said he likes the makeup of his team and how the Vikings will come into Friday’s matchup at Valencia High loose.

“We have even-keel (senior) Kalia (Summerlin) and (senior) Jennifer (Anumba) who I never really see her get up or down,” Mike said, “Having those two help.”

But there was another pair who got the Vikings going on Tuesday.

Freshman guard Sabrina Thompson scored 12 points, hitting 4-of-6 3-pointers. Senior forward Preea Johnson added 11 in her first Foothill start.

The Vikings led comfortably throughout — 13-6 after a quarter and 31-15 after two.

Valencia outscored Golden Valley 24-11 in the final frame.

Golden Valley head coach Kerri Garland said the play of her bigs — Courtney Maduike and Cherokee Cardriche — was a bright spot Tuesday.

Ashley Oliver scored 10 points to lead the Grizzlies (6-14, 0-7).
