Mary Gregory, of Mary's Schoolhouse, was recently installed as the new president of the Family Day Care Association of the Santa Clarita Valley, at the organization's annual installation and awards ceremony.

The formal dressy affair boasted a Hollywood theme and was held in the banquet room at Wolf Creek restaurant in Valencia. The night of glamour and glitz came complete with a red carpet welcome, photos and confetti.

"Oscars" were awarded to incoming 2009 officers and board members by guest celebrity actor James Edson. Edson of Santa Clarita has appeared in numerous television shows including "The Drew Carey Show," "Joan of Arcadia," "Sports Night" and "Two and a Half Men."

His children have attended licensed, family child care for years from infancy to school age, said Gregory.
"He showed his appreciation by volunteering to be the celebrity emcee," Gregory said. "He injected much humor and charisma into the script created by Ann Koretz."

In addition to Gregory, other officers installed included vice president: Jennifer Pearlstein; treasurer: Nancy Hamilton; secretary: Kathryn DeRosa; newsletter editor: Ann Koretz and board members: Debbie Estes, Vicky Cooke, Reba Fahar and Ann Koretz.

Outgoing leaders of 2008 were honored with certificates of appreciation and commendations from Los Angeles County for their community service. Certificates of appreciation were also presented to association committee chairs.

Lynn Frei was named the recipient of the Helen Weiss Memorial Scholarship award by the 2008 honoree Nancy Hamilton. Hamilton presented Frei with a plaque, butterfly jewelry pin and a scholarship award.

Among Frei's accomplishments acknowledged during the presentation was her effort at reorganizing the association's lending library.

The Family Day Care Association of the SCV is a nonprofit group that offers ongoing support and training for in-home early-child caregivers.

The mission of the group is to support members who provide "high quality, affordable care of children in a warm, safe, licensed home setting other than their own."

The organization was founded in 1989. In the early days of the association former mayor and city councilwoman Jo Anne Darcy often served as installing officer.

The group meets 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month at the New Apostolic Church, 28877 Bouquet Canyon Road, Saugus.

The Child Care Resource Center will be conducting a focus group for providers at the association's Feb. 10 meeting.

Meetings include networking and professional development education. The organization also participates in community functions such as Play Day for Kids and the Baby Expo.

The association has a free referral system for parents needing child care in the SCV. Matt Gregory of Keller Williams and the Child Care Resource Center were named as 2009 corporate sponsors. Matt Gregory was also feted for his contributions of installation raffle and presentation gifts.

A 50/50 fundraising raffle was also held with association member Beckie Warloe earning the $85 prize.
