The Saugus Union School District will hold a series of community meetings this week and next regarding the reopening of Emblem Academy, formerly Emblem Elementary School, for the 2013-2014 school year.

The five community meetings, three of which will take place this week, will be followed by two open houses at the school on Feb. 20 from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.

Emblem families attending Highlands Elementary School will have their children automatically enrolled at Emblem Academy for the 2013-2014 school year.

Parents with children attending another school in the Saugus Union district can pick up an Intra-District Transfer request from the office of the school their children currently attend.

Parents with children outside the Saugus Union district can pick up that request at their home district offices.

Priority enrollment will be given to families who reside within Emblem’s service boundaries.

Emblem, which was closed for modernization that took longer than expected, will reopen with a focus on science, technology, engineering and math, known collectively as STEM.

Jon Baker, the school’s new principal, said its educational model will seek to combine the principles of STEM education with other approaches, including hands-on educational projects like school gardens and an extra focus on teaching business principles, entrepreneurship and ethics.

Collectively, Baker called this approach ESTEEM: ethics, science, technology, engineering, entrepreneurship and math.
