One person was taken to the hospital this morning after three tractor-trailers jackknifed resulting in a multi-vehicle pileup on Highway 14 at Escondido Canyon Road, fire and law enforcement officials said.

Shortly before 5:45 a.m., three tractor-trailers southbound on the highway jackknifed and collided with each other near Escondido, blocking all lanes and stopping all southbound traffic on the major Antelope Valley commuter route, a California Highway Patrol Officer said.

Paramedics with the Los Angeles County Fire Department were dispatched to the crash at 5:47 a.m., said Supervisor Cheryl Sims.

“We transported one person to a local hospital,” she told The Signal.

Firefighters notified Caltrans to mop up gallons of fuel leaking from the crash, she said.

At least two tow trucks and one flat-bed automobile-hauling truck were called by CHP officers to take away the damaged vehicles, Sims said.

The highway was cleared and traffic restored at 8:36 a.m., according to the CHP.

“The guys are still out there,” said CHP Sgt. John Lutz shortly after 9:45 a.m.
