Two members of Santa Clarita's Newhall Community Center's boxing program took home titles after participating in the USA Boxing Southern California District Championship Tournament held January 22-25 in Pacoima.

Mike Nolasco, 20, fought for the championship against a more experienced boxer from the City of Duarte and defeated him after three rounds of combat. Nidia Vargas, 21, claimed victory in the finals after rounds against a fighter from the City of San Bernardino in the finals.

Mike became a member of the Santa Clarita Boxing program four years ago and Nidia joined last year. Both champions' accomplishments are a testament to their dedication to the boxing program alongside their trainer, Senior Boxing Coach Arthur "Chico" Magaña.

The Community Center's Boxing Program is designed to increase self confidence and discipline and strives to offer a positive outlet for youth through boxing. Certified coaches and volunteers helped develop over 15 regional and national champions, with over 50 tournament wins since 1994
.
The Newhall Community Center is funded and staffed by the City of Santa Clarita and is located at 22421 Market Street.
