The Canyon Cowboys girls basketball team began the second half of the Foothill League season in the best possible way, running through an overmatched Golden Valley Grizzlies squad in a 78-28 blowout win on Friday night at Canyon.

“We don’t go into the beginning of any game taking our opponents lightly,” said Canyon senior standout Jaya Schultz, who led all scorers with 20 points.

Such was obvious on Friday, as Canyon (18-4 overall, 5-1 in Foothill League) jumped on top of the Grizzlies 12-0 in the early stages of the first quarter.

While the Grizzlies made substitutions and changed their approach in response to the Cowboys’ smothering defense, Canyon was simply too disciplined and physical for those changes to matter.

The Grizzlies (6-13, 0-6) turned the ball over 10 times in the first quarter alone, and didn’t score on a field-goal attempt until midway through the second quarter.

Such was compounded by the fact that Canyon’s offense was just as efficient.

Four Cowboys scored in double digits, including a 17-point performance from junior guard Kali Vittallo, whose long-range shooting abilities opened up the middle for senior Alia McCoy, who added 11 points of her own.

Golden Valley is still looking for its first league win, while Canyon is still alive for a chance at the Foothill League title after falling to Valencia earlier this season.
