SAN FERNANDO - Esperanza Castro started serving a 13-year sentence today for killing her husband, Ramon Castro, in 2006.

San Fernando Court Superior Court Judge Burt Pines sentenced her Monday after she pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

Castro, 45, killed her husband in the bedroom of their Canyon Country home on March 22, 2006.

Deputies found Ramon Castro's naked and bloody body in the bed of his pickup truck, which was abandoned under the Highway 14 overpass on Sierra Highway.

Three weeks after Castro's first trial ended in a hung jury, Pines ordered a new trial for Castro on May 17, 2008.

The jury of seven women and five men could not unanimously agree that the prosecution proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Castro killed her husband.

After the hung jury, Deputy District Attorney Paula Gonzales told the court that she would prepare for another trial against Castro.

During her first trial, it was learned that Castro called deputies the night before to report a burglary at her home.
