LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say a series of crashes on a rainy Hollywood freeway involved 16 cars and injured eight people, one critically.

California Highway Patrol Officer Ed Jacobs says cars began colliding shortly before 12:30 a.m. Friday on the 101 freeway, snarling traffic for about two hours.

He says there were six separate collisions in the same area, including two hit-and-runs and one involving a person who was struck after getting out of a car.

A fire official tells City News Service that the pedestrian was hospitalized in critical condition and the others had minor injuries.

Authorities say the road was slick from rain and people may have been driving too fast for the conditions.

The area is expected to get rain on and off through early Saturday.
