Gloria Mercado-Fortine, a member of the William S. Hart Union High School District board, made her 2014 candidacy for City Council official during a news conference Thursday at City Hall.

The conference drew about 15 people, who repeatedly applauded Mercado-Fortine as she talked about her experience and campaign plans.

Specifically, Mercado-Fortine said she wants to continue to push for development and expansion that doesn’t come at the cost of a loss of neighborhood or community identity.

This diversity is part of what makes the city special, Mercado-Fortine added.

She said it is important for city government to represent every part of the diverse Santa Clarita community, including its Latino population.

She also said, if elected, she wants to be both transparent and accessible.

Mercado-Fortine’s term on the Hart district board does not expire until 2015. If she is unsuccessful in her City Council bid, she said, she would continue serving on the school board.
