Response to Leigh Hart's article, "Resolutions and Prayers for New Year," published Jan. 13.

If the population of Gaza had the power to stop Hamas from shooting rockets into Israel, wouldn't the Israelis back off?

Well, they don't, so Israel hasn't any choice but to destroy Hamas or weaken them enough that they can't control the region any longer.

It is a shame that so many innocents are maimed or killed, but when Hamas surrounds themselves with civilians this is what happens.

Instead of damning Israel for this, please try to realize who is responsible for the carnage.

As for the Gaza strip belonging to Egypt from 1948 to 1967, it would be still if Egypt hadn't gone to war to destroy Israel.

If the Palestine Authority weren't so corrupt, it might be in power in Gaza. After Arafat rejected the terms of the Oslo Accords, President Clinton came away embarrassed. President Bush took note of that and dismissed Arafat.

We should realize that Palestine could be a state but Fatah, Hamas, Hezbollah and others are intent on nothing less than destroying Israel.

The only thing they respect is power, and let's pray that Israel doesn't quit.
