Gloria Mercado Fortine, a trustee with the William S. Hart School Board, has announced she will run for City Council.

Longtime William S. Hart Union High School District board member Gloria Mercado-Fortine announced Wednesday that she plans to seek a seat on the Santa Clarita City Council next year.

"I want to step up my service to my community," Mercado-Fortine said. "It’s been a wonderful journey and I think with all my background and my experience and connection to this valley I can bring new and refreshing leadership."

Mercado-Fortine said she thinks safety and education are two areas that need the city’s continued focus.

"People move here to this valley because of the schools," Mercado-Fortine said. "Businesses love being here because their employees want to be here because of our schools."

In terms of city growth and development, Mercado-Fortine said the city needs to take care not to eliminate community and neighborhood culture when expanding.

"We need to remember to really focus on our diverse neighborhoods and really maintain the feel of those communities," Mercado-Fortine said.

Mercado-Fortine also said it is time to finally halt the proposed Cemex, adding she would have no problems being "more aggressive" in efforts to do so.

Council members Frank Ferry, Marsha McLean and Laurene Weste are all up for re-election in 2014. Each has served on the council for more than a decade.

Mercado-Fortine said she thinks she can bring an outside perspective to the council.

"Sometimes it’s good to have a fresh set of eyes looking at things," she said.

Mercado-Fortine has been a member of the Hart board since 1997. Prior to that she served on the Castaic Union School District board and was a member of the Castaic Area Town Council.

Mercado-Fortine is a lifelong resident of the Santa Clarita Valley who graduated from Hart High School. Her husband, Bruce, is a trustee for College of the Canyons.
