Vote yes on gun bills

To Congressman Howard McKeon:

As one of your constituents in Santa Clarita, I urge you to vote yes on the common sense gun safety bills that will be presented to the House of Representatives in the weeks ahead.

There has never been a better time for the United States to consider how best to protect the people of this country without destroying the Second Amendment. As head of the House Armed Services committee, you know the necessity for assault weapons issued to our military personnel.

Those weapons do not belong in the hands of the ordinary citizen. The same can be said for high-capacity clips and drums.

By all means, let hunters have their sporting guns. Let the average Joe have his handgun if he chooses to protect his family with weapons. But please stop the wrong guns from getting into the wrong hands.

As you mull over the issues, I ask you to consider if your feelings would be the same if the recent massacre of young children had occurred in Newhall, Calif., instead of Newtown, Conn. Would you feel the same if the victims had been your grandchildren or sons and daughters of your neighbors, and had been shot by 3-11 bullets each?

If you decide to vote "no" on these bills, could you please explain to me why you choose to do so? And if you do vote "no," I can only hope that the next violent episode won’t happen here in Santa Clarita so that you have to come home and explain that decision to grieving families, to attend funerals of the victims who will be your constituents and may very well be your friends.

Please, Congressman McKeon, please give this a lot of thought.
