Educators and students at Golden Valley High School were mourning a student with a “bigger than life” smile today after the youth died suddenly at his home of an apparent medical condition.

Eliyah Linell, a junior, was pronounced dead at his home Saturday, according to a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner.

“The cause of death is undetermined,” said Lt. Fred Corral Tuesday.

A statement from the William S. Hart Union High School District said: “Our hearts and thoughts go out to Eliyah’s family and friends on his sudden passing, which appears to be the result of a medical condition.”

More details on the cause of death were not available.

Golden Valley Principal Sal Frias said Linell’s loss will be felt throughout the school.

A moment of silence in Linell’s honor is scheduled to take place at the school’s basketball game tonight as the Golden Valley Grizzlies face the Saugus Centurions at Golden Valley High at 6:30 p.m.

“Everyone will be wearing blue ribbons,” Frias said. “Blue was his favorite color.”

“He always made you smile,” he said. “And he had a smile that was bigger than life.”

Linell was a fixture for the school’s daily news broadcast class, the principal said. He was also a member of the high school band.

On Tuesday, his fellow band members posted a memorial on their school webpage depicting a black-and-white photo of Linell smiling and flashing a peace sign. It reads: “In memory of Eliyah Linell 1996-2013.”
