Five people, including a motorcyclist and two local sheriff’s deputies, were taken to the hospital Tuesday with varying degree of injury following a three-vehicle crash in Castaic, a California Highway Patrol investigator said.

Shortly after 1 p.m., three vehicles — a car, a motorcycle and a Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station cruiser — collided near the intersection of The Old Road and Wedgewood Court, south of Hillcrest Parkway, said CHP Officer Allen Begley.

Although some of the injuries were significant, none were believed to be life-threatening, said Begley, investigator of the crash.

All parties were taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, he said.

Most seriously injured was a motorcyclist, Begley said.

“He suffered some broken bones and is still at Henry Mayo,” he said late Tuesday.

Two deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station were examined by doctors as a precaution, said Lt. Tom Bryski.

“The deputies are all right,” he said.

Two occupants in the third vehicle — a black four-door Saturn — also complained of pain, Begley said. Both also went to the hospital.

According to the CHP investigator, the motorcyclist was traveling at a very high rate of speed on The Old Road and sped past an unmarked CHP vehicle.

“When a car turned in front of him, he broad-sided the vehicle,” Begley said of the motorcyclist.

Asked how the sheriff’s cruiser figured in the crash, Begley said: “He was so close to the collision that, in order to avoid our car, he swerved.”

The cruiser crashed through a gate and stopped in an open field.
