Have a heart for cardiac care

Have you found yourself singing “Blowin’ in the Wind” recently? I don’t remember a time in the Santa Clarita Valley where the wind has blown so incessently like it has the past week. I’ve lived here since 1978 and I think this wind is one for the record books!

Sweetheart Gala

Do you know someone who has heart problems? Nearly every family has had someone who has died or suffered from severe heart disease. Here’s your chance to give back by supporting cardiac care services at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital by attending the annual Sweetheart Gala and donating to the event’s “fund-a-need.”

The gala will be held Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Hyatt Regency Valencia and honor the Sweetheart Couple, Linda and Moe Hafizi.

It will be a beautiful event, produced with all the style and elegance one expects from a Shelley Hann fundraiser!

This is also a great event to take your special Valentine.

Of course, you don’t need a special someone in your life to attend, come with a friend.

Supporting cardiac care services is what will warm your heart. To reserve your tickets email

Rita’s? Really?

I love Florida. I really shouldn’t. I had a bad personal experience in Florida in the summer of 2009. Yet, that was a reflection on the people involved — not a reflection on the state. Florida is a big state, and there are many parts. I should clarify that I love the area around Tampa and Clearwater. I am not a fan of heat or humidity, something in which Florida excels, yet... there is a magic about the place.

I love the big, fluffly white clouds.

I love the afternoon thunder and lightening storms.

I love the fine white sand on Clearwater Beach.

I love the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, a beautiful azure blue that is like swimming in bath water.

I love swimming in that water as the pelicans skim across the water just inches from my head, or seeing dolphins leap and jump just yards from my reach.

I love Florida for the beautiful birds, the fish that jump from the water and the shells on the beach.

I love Florida for Frenchy’s grouper sandwich.

I love Florida for Sonny’s BBQ restaurants.

But above it all, most of all I love Florida for Rita’s Frozen Custard.

I nearly caused a multicar pileup on Bouquet Canyon near Seco this week when I thought I had spotted the familar red and white stripped Rita’s cup adorning a building near the corner.

I had to drive by the location again to prove that my eyes were not deceiving me!

Yes! It is a Rita’s! A Rita’s in the SCV. To what good fortune do I owe this miraculous event?

I pulled into the tiny shopping center and saw the posters on the windows that read “coming soon.”

Rita’s is “coming soon” to the SCV? I am beside myself with anticipation!

If you’ve never experienced Rita’s you are in for a huge treat!

Frozen custard isn’t just “ice cream”... it is something more. Rich, creamy, heavenly.
