Social Security plight is due to spendthrift politicians

Having read The Signal for 40 years, I am compelled to write my first Letter to the Editor.

I am appalled by Rob Kerchner’s Jan. 6 rant on Social Security (or as he calls it, "antisocial theft"). Having paid into it my entire working life and now living meagerly on it in my retirement, I and countless others would be on the street without it.

The challenge is keeping up with ever-increasing costs of everything from medical insurance to gasoline. I, sir, would love to be an "affluent grandparent."

You can "thank" President Johnson for moving Social Security money from an untouchable fund into a general fund that was spent by our politicians.

You can also "thank" President Carter for allowing immigrants who never paid into the fund to receive benefits. These are the reasons for it not being solvent today.

The true reason for our "penniless future generations" is the out-of-control spending by our politicians, and the billions of dollars sent to countries that have nothing but hate for us, while we have children in our own country going to bed hungry and families living in cars.
