Santa Clarita Valley schools and most government buildings will be closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday.

Local school districts are closed for the holiday, as are county and federal, offices, including post offices. Santa Clarita City Hall also will be closed.

Honoring the slain civil rights leader of the 1960s, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was declared a federal holiday in 1983.

It is observed on the third Monday of January and designed to fall on or near King’s birth date of Jan. 15, 1929.
