A 50-year-old Texas man wanted on an out-of-state warrant for a sex offense was arrested Thursday at the Walmart in Stevenson Ranch, a local Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.
Mario Sanmiguel of El Paso was taken into custody after deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station were alerted to his whereabouts by the U.S. Marshals Service, said sheriff’s Lt. Mark Hershey.
About 10:30 a.m. Thursday, deputies caught up with a man, described as 5-foot-9 and 140 pounds, at the Walmart on The Old Road near Pico Canyon Road.
“We got a call from the U.S. Marshals that they had a warrant out for this guy’s arrest,” Hershey said.
The man was found with his 7-year-old son in a van towing a flat bed trailer believed stolen in Los Angeles, Hershey said.
No one, including the boy, was hurt, he said.
Sanmiguel was charged in connection with a felony pertaining to the warrant.
He is also expected to be charged in connection with the trailer found attached to his van, law enforcement officers said. The trailer was believed stolen in Los Angeles.
“He will be returned to Texas,” said Deputy Laura Vega of the U.S. Marshals Service.
Sanmiguel is expected to be arraigned in San Fernando Superior Court Monday, then escorted by U.S. Marshals to Texas, Vega said.
State authorities took the man’s son into protective custody, she said.
