Santa Clarita cellphone projects move forward

Members of the Santa Clarita Planning Commission have voted to move forward with two planned cellular communications projects in the city.

One project, the construction of a cellphone tower in Canyon Country Park, received feedback from the commission at its Tuesday night meeting and will be back before commissioners for further study on March 19, according to city Senior Planner Jason Smisko.

Smisko said the commission directed the project’s applicant, AT&T Mobility, to present a plan for a detached cell tower nearer Soledad Canyon Road than originally proposed. The tower would be approximately 35 feet tall, Smisko said.

The reasoning behind the commission’s decision is that placing the tower nearer the road means it is farther away from homes that ring the park to the north and west. The tower thus would not have to be as tall.

Commission members also voted unanimously to approve a proposed Verizon Wireless communications facility at 27720 Dickason Drive in Valencia, Smisko said.

This will entail construction of two cupolas on the roof of an existing 21,857-square-foot office building. The facility will be unmanned.
