A county agency has OK’d another annexation by the city of Santa Clarita, the latest in a recent string of expansions that have added thousands of acres and new residents to the city.

The latest, known as the South Sand Canyon annexation, covers a largely rural area consisting of about 692 acres generally located south of the intersection of Placerita Canyon Road and Sand Canyon Road and includes a portion of the Angeles National Forest.

The land takes in two “movie ranches” on which TV shows and other videos are shot. Santa Clarita has proposed an overlay district within the city for filming-oriented business in a bid to attract more such industry to the Santa Clarita Valley.

The total assessed value for the land is around $12.6 million, according to the Los Angeles County Local Agency Formation Commission, which gave a nod to the annexation Wednesday.

LAFCO still has to conduct a protest hearing regarding the annexation, scheduled for Feb. 13, before it’s final, a city official said.

The area has only 40 residents and 13 single-family homes; no future development is planned in the area, according to a review conducted by LAFCO.

The area includes both the Sable Ranch and Rancho Maria and the Rancho Deluxe movie ranches, said Santa Clarita Associate Planner Patrick Leclair.

The city’s film office reported Wednesday that 2012 was a banner year for filming in Santa Clarita, which saw an economic impact of $21.7 million for the year.

“We like filming in Santa Clarita, and we want to encourage that,” Leclair said.

The city has two other annexations in the works, Leclair said. One, the Norland Road annexation, consists of an area near Sand Canyon and includes both city-owned open space and rural county land.

The other, which has yet to receive approval from the Santa Clarita City Council, is for land in Saugus near the recently annexed area of North Copper Hill, Leclair said.
