California Highway Patrol officers reopened all lanes of the northbound Interstate 5 freeway today after a car fire shut down some of the lanes and stalled traffic.
The freeway through the Newhall Pass was reopened around noon, CHP Officer Ed Jacobs said. But the damage was done: traffic was backed up on both the I-5 and Interstate 210 after noon, CHP officials said.
The problem was ignited by a car fire on the northbound I-5 near Weldon Canyon Road around 10:45 a.m. The fire spread to the nearby hillside and brief shut down the entire northbound freeway.
