Gameday Sports Grille & Bar opened in 2011 on The Old Road near Magic Mountain Parkway.

Gameday Sports Grille & Bar on the Old Road in Santa Clarita closed Monday night, said a spokesman with the restaurant.

“It’s a bittersweet day today,” said Tom Vercellono, general manager.

The eatery was originally opened on Oct. 24, 2011 by Tom and Jodi Law as a sports-related restaurant, filled with sports memorabilia and 30 televisions.

The Laws, however, sold the restaurant to the property owner in August 2012 who continued to operate it under the name Gameday.

The owner wants to re-brand and re-open a more family oriented restaurant rather than a sports bar, Vercellono said.

The 8,550 square-foot restaurant was long occupied by Hamburger Hamlet, and later Bella Cucina which relocated to Saugus.

“We told all the team members that we’re closing and we’d like to re-hire them when we re-open,” Vercellono said.
But, he realizes many of the 37 employees may find other employment before a new restaurant launches, he said.
It’s not known what name the new restaurant will have, what the menu will be or when it will open, he said.
The property owner was not available for comment.
