College of the Canyons will consider 13 candidates to fill the open seat on its Board of Trustees, a school official said Tuesday.

College officials began their search in December to fill the seat of former Trustee Scott Wilk, who resigned after winning an Assembly seat in November.

Bruce Battle, a COC spokesman, said the 13 candidates come from a variety of backgrounds.

“It’s a pretty good mix of people who are interested in education,” Battle said. “It’s just a really strong mix.”

Battle said a special board meeting to interview the candidates is being scheduled next week. At that meeting the other four members of the Board of Trustees will conduct a question-and-answer session with each candidate before deciding on whom to appoint.

Battle said the board is in the process of finding a time next week when all 13 candidates can appear. The date and time of the meeting should be announced within the next day or two, Battle said.

Whoever the board appoints will serve out the roughly three years remaining in Wilk’s term.

Wilk was originally appointed to the COC board in 2006. He was elected to a four-year term in November 2011.

The names of the applicants have not been released.
