Valencia High senior Sean Murphy is The Signal's 2012 All-Santa Clarita Valley Football Player of the Year.

We asked all season long.

How does one go from average to extraordinary?

Everyone, even the subject of the question was basic about the answer.

Opportunity, tools and confidence.

Those three things took Sean Murphy from a very average 2011 to a very extraordinary 2012.

The Valencia High quarterback passed for 3,936 yards and a school record 38 touchdowns to 14 interceptions, and led the Vikings to their fourth straight Foothill League title and fourth trip to the CIF-Southern Section Northern Division semifinals in five seasons.

In 2011, he accumulated 1,577 passing yards and six touchdowns to four interceptions.

In every aspect of his game, he was different.

He went from timid and conservative, to assertive and gutsy.

Through every game, there was nothing that could rattle Murphy.

Sure, he had receivers that were some of the best athletes in the Foothill League, but he seemingly always made the right reads, the right throws and his timing was impeccable.

Murphy was selected by the area’s coaches as the Foothill League Player of the Year — an award voted on before the postseason begins.

This award we hand out looks at the whole body of work, and what put Murphy over the top was consistent, stellar performances in the postseason — three games, 1,088 passing yards, eight touchdown passes.
Murphy turned the page on 2011 in a big way, and now he is our 2012 All-Santa Clarita Valley Football Player of the Year.
