Deputies have no new leads in the Santa Clarita Metrolink smash-and-grab burglaries as of Thursday, said Lt. Brenda Cambra of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station.

"At different Metrolink stations on Jan. 8, two crimes occurred at the Via Princessa and three at the Soledad (Canyon Road) and Commuter Way location," Cambra said. "Windows were smashed and it appears mostly stereos were taken, but also some items (were) left in the car."

Commuters need to use common sense and precautions when leaving their cars in the lot, Cambra said.

"Lock all the doors and make sure nothing valuable is visible. You wouldn't leave $200 on your dash.

When you leave a high-priced electronic device out, that's what you're doing," Cambra said.

She also warned against leaving duffle bags, backpacks or anything that thieves associate with laptops or other electronics. "Even if you don't have a laptop in the bag, the thief might think so and break in," she said.

The string of burglaries shocked some commuters.

"I'm really afraid to park there. The security is up at the top and the parking lot is on the bottom," said Anita Calkins of Castaic. She told The Signal last week she will not park at the Santa Clarita Metrolink Station anymore.

Paul Labarbera of Saugus no longer takes the train. He drives to work in Glendale because the lot burglars stole more than $1,000 worth of property from his vehicle parked at the Santa Clarita Metrolink Station lot two weeks ago.

"I came off from the train and somebody had tossed a rock through the passenger-side window. They stole my stereo, GPS, all the CDs and whatever else they rummaged through and got," Labarbera said.

Anyone with tips or information should contact Sgt. James Anderson at the Sheriff's Station.
The phone number is (661) 255-1121.
