Sierra Pelona Valley Wine Festival is to be held Jan. 26 from noon to 4 p.m. at Reyes Winery in Agua Dulce, and organizers hope to make this an annual event.

The Sierra Pelona Valley Vintners, local winemakers and other wineries and breweries from across Southern California plan to celebrate the region’s designation as a wine grape-growing area while raising funds to benefit the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, organizers said.

Lying just north of Santa Clarita, the Sierra Pelona Valley was approved as an American Viticultural Area — AVA — by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau in July 2010.

Once an area is designated as an AVA region, at least 85 percent of the grapes used to make a wine must be grown in the area if the region is mentioned on its label.

Organizers said they expect 45 winery, brewery and spirit vendors to participate in the festival, along with 25 food vendors. They are also anticipating 500 to 800 people will attend.

Proceeds from a silent auction will benefit the Santa Clarita Valley’s only hospital, organizers said.
