First SCV baby born in style

Mother Norma Polanco-Ramirez, left, holds her daughter, New Year's baby Keylen Elizabeth as father Oscar Ramirez and brother Kevin, 3, right, get a look at the first baby of 2013 born at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital on Tuesday.

The first baby born in the Santa Clarita Valley this year did so with definite style.

Keylen Elizabeth Sanchez was born at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital on Jan. 1 at precisely 11:13 a.m.

That means nurses recording vital information about the baby inside the hospital’s Womens Unit Tuesday morning entered the exact same digits for the newborn’s birth date and time — 1 1 1 3.

“I’m so happy. I’m very proud,” said infant’s mother Norma Elizabeth Polanco-Ramirez, holding her tiny 7-pound 12-ounce daughter wrapped snuggly in a white crocheted blanket of pastel pink and yellow colors.

Shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday, she and her husband, Oscar Sanchez, rushed to the hospital when she went into labor.

In less than three hours the baby was born.

“I chose the name, Keylen, because it was a name I heard when I had my son and it was a name I liked,” she said.

The Newhall couple has a three-year-old son, Kevin, who made sure he was in every photograph of his little sister snapped inside the hospital Tuesday.

“It was a fast delivery,” said Registered Nurse Lisa Lavizani.

She and the other attending nurses — Laura Richards, Tess Faczan and Angie Watkins — gathered around the mother’s hospital bedside to share in celebrating Santa Clarita Valley’s first child of 2013.

The parents were thrilled to receive a $50 gift certificate from Carol Jones for any of the items offered for sale in the hospital’s gift shop.

After more than a year of doom and gloom predicted for 2012 by many observers reflecting on the Mayan calendar, Tuesday’s birth was a very positive sign for Keylen’s parents.

“I am just very proud,” said the father.

When asked about the baby’s date and birth containing the same digits, he shook his head.

“I can’t believe it,” he said.
