CHP checkpoint nets no DUI arrests

No drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol during Saturday’s 8-hour checkpoint run by the California Highway Patrol, according to an officer.

The checkpoint ran from 6:30 p.m. Saturday to 2:30 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Constitution Avenue and The Old Road.

Newhall station CHP Sgt. Pack said he did not know how many cars were screened during the checkpoint, but the plan was to check every driver that came through the checkpoint, traffic permitting.

A similar checkpoint run by the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on Dec. 21 netted two DUI arrests, as well as 14 other violations.

Officers screened 964 vehicles during that checkpoint, which also ran for 8 hours.

Saturday’s checkpoint is part of a larger DUI enforcement effort during the holiday season.

The Sheriff’s Department reports it has made 1,480 DUI arrests in the county from Dec. 14 to Thursday, though that number could be higher as some agencies have yet to report their arrests.

The department made 1,849 DUI arrests last year over the same time period.

Law enforcement officials will continue this period of maximum enforcement through the end of the year, with additional checkpoints set up around the county.

No other checkpoints are planned for the Santa Clarita Valley area at this time.
