The Grizzlies' James Chevious (3) goes up against Village Christian on Saturday at Golden Valley.

Golden Valley boys basketball saw its struggles continue against a powerhouse Village Christian team on Saturday night at Golden Valley High School.

Victims of an 87-38 blow out, the Grizzlies got an unfortunate first hand look at what dominate basketball looks like.

The Crusaders (10-1), who last year won the CIF Division V state title, set the tone early with their full court press, which generated six early turnovers and helped establish an intimidating 26-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

“We have a lot of competition in practice which helps establish our intensity during games like this,” said Crusaders assistant head coach Jim Frankian. “We kind of lost focus on offense after that but our defense was solid pretty much most of the game.”

After easing up on the press, Grizziles players were able to get some offense going.

That came mainly in the third quarter, when Dominique Gully and James Chevious attacked Valley Christian one on one.

The two combined for 18 of the team’s 38 points and helped the Grizzlies eventually outscore the Crusaders 20-16 in the third quarter.

Unfortunately for Golden Valley (1-7), the Grizzlies could do little to stop some of Valley Christian’s impact players from having their way.

Brian Alberts led the way with 24 points for the Crusaders. His counterpart, guard Jerrick Ahanmisi had 19 points and was complemented by big man Marsalis Johnson’s 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Golden Valley plays Camarillo on the road on Jan. 2.
