American Legion hosts an end-of-world party

Bob Heinisch, left, says good night to bartender Samantha Cooper as she heads home after her shift at the American Legion Hall Post 507 in Newhall on Friday.

Members of American Legion Post 507 gathered at their headquarters in Newhall Friday night to ensure the purported end of the world was a lively occasion.

A modest crowd held a part to mark what some believed would be the end of the world. A sign propped up casually against a wall read, “The End is Here.”

But that doesn’t mean any of the party’s attendees actually thought the world would meet its doom Friday, said Bob Heinisch, the adjutant of Post 507.

“Most of us are veterans,” Heinisch said, surveying the attendees. “It would take a lot more than a Mayan calendar to scare us.”

Rather, the end of the world was an opportunity to celebrate the present, Heinisch said.

“What if the world does end?” Heinisch asked. “We can’t do a damn thing about it, so we might as well have some fun.”

One attendee, Samantha Cooper, carried around an assortment of flowers — an apocalyptic gift from her husband.

“My husband said he wanted to buy me some roses because it might be the last chance he ever got,” Cooper said. “And I’ve been giving them out to my friends because it might be the last chance I have.”

Heinisch said the American Legion will host another event today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., dubbed “Survivor Saturday,” if the world doesn’t end before then.
