Response to Carole Lutness' article "A green economy for our planet," (Jan. 15).

Air quality in the U.S. has improved since the 1960s. If you don't think so, look up. Remember when you couldn't see the foothills while in the Los Angeles basin?

As for water quality, tap water may be safer than bottled. Our drinking water comes from the tap. It isn't just local water that is safe; the whole country has it.

Why tinker with these precious resources by assuming more government control is a better answer? The same goes for government involvement in the auto industry.

Government mandates will probably doom the domestic manufacturers because Americans don't want underpowered little cars.

Thank God Ford didn't sign on for government assistance. Ford is about to manufacture the Flex station wagon with direct fuel injection that may reduce gasoline consumption to that of hybrids or maybe even better.

Let us take advantage of wind and solar power, too. Just realize that whatever we do with either or both, they will never replace oil.

Instead, consider what France has done with nuclear power.
