A 26-year-old man was in custody Friday after allegedly throwing a lit Molotov cocktail through a window of his parents’ Castaic home, Sheriff’s Department officials said.

Investigators determined the device was a dud and failed to ignite, despite being lit. There was no fire and no reports of injuries.

California Highway Patrol investigators searched for the suspect until they found and impounded his car in Oxnard. The CHP reported Ahmad Smadi was in custody around 7 p.m. Thursday.

He was transferred to the custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, according to Lt. Gregory Nelson.
Smadi, of Sun Valley, reportedly had made threats against his family before the attack, according to Capt. Mike Parker with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Due to those threats and others reportedly made against his roommates and friends, investigators made contact or attempted to contact relatives and friends in Sun Valley, Burbank and Glendale after the incident.

In another case, Smadi allegedly brandished a knife at a roommate. Nelson confirmed Smadi has been arrested and booked but could not say for sure what charges he faced in that case.

It was originally reported Smadi was wanted for felony use of a destructive device and making terrorist threats. He may also be facing federal charges.

Smadi was being held on $501,000 bail and was scheduled to appear in San Fernando Superior Court on Monday, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
