Santa Clarita Christian boys basketball head coach James Mosley knew he had a few players with big-time potential.
Even Mosley was surprised at how quickly 6-foot-6 forward Phillip Webb broke out with a performance like Thursday night’s.
Webb, a junior who transferred to SCCS this year from the Cayman Islands, scored 36 points and added 21 rebounds and six blocks to lead the Cardinals past California City 61-51 at The Master’s College.
“I thought he would (have a game like this),” Mosley said. “I thought it would come more toward league. He’s really just like a baby. He started just playing just a little bit ago. He started up and his parents brought him in the states to play basketball.”
Senior Larue Nixon added 12 points for SCCS (4-3) and sophomore Christopher Collins, another Cayman Islands transfer, chipped in 12 rebounds.
But on Thursday, it was all about Webb.
He helped the Cardinals turn a 28-21 halftime lead into a 49-32 advantage headed into the fourth quarter.
Cal City (2-4) put together a small rally with a late 8-0 run, but SCCS hung tough.
“We’re still learning. We have lot of new guys and we’re just trying to come together,” Mosley said. “We haven’t had a lot of time together.”
The Cardinals resume play on Monday against Frazier Mountain at TMC.
