As the April 8 City Council election draws closer, candidate Maria Gutzeit has garnered another endorsement.

The Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters this week announced its endorsement.

The environmental political action committee was formed in 1976, and bases its endorsements on candidates' positions on environmental issues, according to the group's Web site.

"We are looking for environmental champions, and we believe that (Gutzeit) will be a champion," league president Mitchell Schwartz said in a statement.

Director of the Newhall County Water District board, Gutzeit - an engineer by trade - has focused on issues including regional bicycle trail planning, open space preservation, and cleanup of the polluted Whittaker-Bermite property in the center of the city.

"It's really great to have them look at a local race ... and try to recognize people that have done things for the environment," she said, and added she is hoping to receive an endorsement from the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

While many absentee ballots have likely already been returned, Gutzeit said the race "is not over until it's over.

"Definitely, we're going after every last vote."
