Members of the William S. Hart Union High School District board voted unanimously to accept $120,000 in scholarship funds from the Henry Mayo Newhall (Family) Foundation during their meeting Wednesday night.

Tony Newhall said the Henry Mayo Newhall (Family) Foundation has donated scholarship funds to the William S. Hart Union High School District since 1980.

“What better way, we thought, is there to provide for the future well-being of the community?” Newhall said. “With these scholarships, we can reward young people in their quest for knowledge whatever they may study or whatever they turn out to be.”

The $120,000 will fund 36 scholarships of amounts ranging from $2,000 to $5,000 to graduates of the district’s six comprehensive high schools — those that offer a full range of studies, sports and extracurricular activities.

Three additional scholarships, ranging from $500 to $1,500, go to graduates of the district’s alternative high schools.

The Santa Clarita Valley Scholarship Foundation will select the scholarship recipients. The names of recipients will be revealed in June.

Elaine Foderaro, the president of the foundation, said the scholarships go to students who demonstrate financial need as well as academic merit.
