Although Crescenta Valley controlled possession and the lead for much of the match, Golden Valley girls soccer scored in the 72nd minute to force a 1-1 tie Tuesday at Golden Valley High School.

Following a foul four yards outside the right corner of the penalty box, Joanna Lagunas bent a free kick over the outstretched fingertips of the goalie into the upper left corner of the net to equalize the score for the Grizzlies.

“Jo put a beautiful hit on the ball,” said Golden Valley head coach Adam Yassaman. “I am yet to see a goalie at this level capable of stopping a shot like that.”

Led by Gabby Lopez and Courtney Ravenell, the Grizzlies (1-2-2) relied on quick, precise passing to move the ball throughout the match.

“Our goal was to work our one-two combinations and slowly move up the field,” Yassaman said.

However, the Grizzlies fell behind early as Crescenta Valley’s Sierra Rhoads broke the scoreless tie in the 22nd minute.

Rhoads fired a rocket from the left corner of the penalty box, around the near post, and past the goalie to give the Falcons (0-1-1) a 1-0 lead.

“They got a quick combination to put their forward through,” Yassaman said. “Nine out of 10 times our keeper directs the ball away from danger.”

The Grizzlies had an opportunity to take the lead late in the game.

Controlling the ball on the left side of the pitch, Ravenell cut right and launched a shot at the net, which was deflected away from danger by Crescenta Valley’s goalkeeper Sam Lizer.

Golden Valley will be in action again today at home against Chatsworth.

“We have skill in every position on the field and a lot of players who have experience playing at this level,” Yassaman said. “We’re playing great up until about 25 yards in front of the net, and then we stop. We need to be more consistent offensively.”
